Each class meets twice a week for 10 weeks. Most classes are focused on a single topic for the entire quarter, so that students can develop a deep understanding of a topic. Past classes have been on abstract algebra, cryptography, complex analysis, algebraic geometry, and more.

Classes meet on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30--8:30 PM. On Tuesdays, the instructor introduces new material.

Ithaca Girls’ Math Circle began in Fall of 2011 after a large cohort of female math enthusiasts started middle school (6th grade in Ithaca), and noticed that math was somehow no longer deemed a “cool” activity for middle school girls.

Where elementary school Math Olympiad is relatively gender balanced, Math Team at Middle School was full of very confident and competitive boys, and few if any girls. How could we feel like a girl powerhouse in a male-dominated environment? Girls would come to Math Club at school and disappear after the first couple of meetings.
